Zoos ordered closed amid rapid rise in Covid-19 infections

The closures come as Bangladesh hits 617,768 total coronavirus cases since the pandemic began

Update : 02 Apr 2021, 02:00 PM

As coronavirus cases rise in Bangladesh, the government has ordered closure of zoos across the country.

In an official notification on Friday, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said that the zoos in capital Dhaka and Rangpur will remain closed until further notice.

On Wednesday, the zoo in port city Chittagong was closed as part of the district administration’s move to close all entertainment hubs and tourist attractions.

Over the last week, the government has ordered the closure of entertainment centres, tourist hotspots, and zoos, among other public places.

The closures come as Bangladesh hits 617,764 total coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

After a nearly seven-month shutdown since late March last year, the zoo at Dhaka’s Mirpur reopened on November 1, but the new surge in covid-19 cases prompted authorities to shut it down again.
