Facebook and Messenger down in Bangladesh

Facebook says its services have been restricted but the BTRC claims access to the sites were not blocked

Update : 26 Mar 2021, 09:38 PM

Social media platform Facebook and its instant messaging app Facebook Messenger have gone down for users in Bangladesh.

Users across the country reported that they were having trouble to access Facebook and Messenger from around 5.30pm on Friday.

A spokesperson for the social media site said that its services have been restricted in Bangladesh but the telecoms regulator says users were not being able to access the sites due to a technical problem

“We’re aware that our services have been restricted in Bangladesh. We’re working to understand more and hope to have full access restored as soon as possible,” a Facebook company spokesperson was quoted in a statement sent to the media on Friday by Benchmark PR, its public relations partner in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC), however, said that it has not blocked access to the sites.

“It’s a technical problem,” its Vice Chairman Subrata Roy Maitra told Dhaka Tribune. "We do not know what the specific problem is, but access to the sites has not been blocked”.

Asked whether access to the site was blocked to stop the spread of rumour amid clashes over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, Maitra said, “It’s not because of that. It’s technical problem.”

According to global outage detecting site, Facebook was not showing any global outage or any other issues, indicating that only local users are facing the problem.
