Narayanganj gas cylinder explosion: Death toll reaches three

Three others are now undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka

Yet another victim, who received burns in a gas explosion at a residential building in Narayanganj, has died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

With this, the death toll reaches three in the incident.

18-month-old Minhaj, who suffered 50% burns, died around 9:30am on Friday, confirmed Partha Sanker Paul, resident surgeon of the hospital.  

On Tuesday, fire erupted from an explosion on the top floor of a six-storey building in Masdai Patenga Mor area of Fatullah.

Garment worker Md Mishal, 27, his wife Mita, 23, their son Minhaj, and daughter Afsana, 5, and Mita's two cousins Mahfuzul Rahman, 12, and Md Sabbir, 15, received burns in the incident. 

Deputy Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Mohammad Abdullah Al Arefin told Dhaka Tribune that the explosion was caused by a leak in a cylinder gas. It is thought that the gas spread throughout the flat, then came in contact with an electric spark or a combustible object.

The victims were first admitted to Narayanganj General Hospital, and were later transferred to Dhaka as their conditions worsened.

Mishal and Mahfuzul died at the burn institute on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Three others -- Mita, Afsana, and Sabbir -- with 14%, 10%, and 42% burns respectively are now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
