Australia has expressed interest in providing necessary assistance for the improvement of higher education and quality assurance systems in Bangladesh.
Representatives of the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment made the remarks in a meeting with the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC), held through a virtual platform on Tuesday, a press release said.
Dr Ferdous Zaman, secretary (Additional Charge) of UGC, said the government had taken multifaceted steps in the past few years to improve the quality of higher education in Bangladesh.
A number of specialized universities are established and new subjects are opened to produce skilled manpower to meet the demands of the current labour market, he added.
Ferdous also mentioned that Bangladesh Accreditation Council is established to oversee the quality of education and the information management system of higher education in Bangladesh is being modernized to help evaluating the education system.
Brett Galt-Smith, councilor of education and research at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, delivered a presentation at the meeting on the Australian education and quality assurance system and assured UGC to provide support for the promotion of higher education in Bangladesh.
At the meeting, Jane Azurin, director of Multilateral Policy at the International Partnership Branch, also gave a presentation on Australia's qualifications recognition system.
Jane called upon UGC to provide the necessary information to update the country’s education profile of Bangladesh.
Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, director (Additional Charge) of Information Management at the Communication and Training Division of UGC, delivered a detailed presentation about the qualifications recognition system in Bangladesh and the various professional organizations associated with it.
Prof Morsaline Billah of Khulna University, and Tahleel Moon, councilor of the Bangladesh High Commission in Australia, also spoke at the meeting.
