Water transport services on all routes suspended

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Monday suspended water transport services on all routes across the country from Dhaka due to inclement weather. "The BIWTA has suspended the plying of all sorts of vessels and this will be continued untill further notice," said BIWTA Public Relations Officer Mobarrak Hossain Majumder as quoted by BSS. At present, a total of 295 vessels operate on different river routes across the country.

In addition, maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox's Bazar have been advised to raise a danger signal of 10 while ports in Mongla and Payra were asked to hoist a danger signal of 8, said a Met office release. The cyclonic storm “Mora” moved slightly northwards and intensified into a severe cyclonic storm at 6 pm, centered about 385 kms south of Chittagong port, 305 kms south of Cox's Bazar port, 450 kms south-southeast of Mongla port and 370 kms south-southeast of Payra port, said the release. Meanwhile, the met office forecasted that there is likely to be rain or thunder showers accompanied by gusts and strong wind in most parts of the Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal & Chittagong divisions, in many parts of the Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and in one or two parts of the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, with heavy to very heavy rain fall in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong.
