Shah Ahmed Shafi, leader of the radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, CMCH Director Brigadier General SM Humayun Kabir said that his condition is reasonably good.

“As you know, he has been suffering from different old-age complications including diabetes and high blood pressure. Recently his sodium level has fallen. The doctors have given some tests for him. Samples have also been collected from him for Covid-19 test,” added the CMCH Director.

Previously on Sunday, the nonagenarian spiritual leader, also called Boro Hujur (the eldest scholar) by his followers, was admitted to the CMCH.

Shafi is the rector of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, also known as Hathazari Madrasa. He is also the chairman of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh.
