The family of Vernon Anthony Paul, who died in the May 27 fire at United Hospital in Dhaka, has lodged a case against the hospital authorities, accusing them of negligence that led to his death.

The case was filed at Gulshan police station on Wednesday evening, confirmed the station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Kamruzzaman.

Five patients, including Vernon, had died in the devastating fire at the hospital's makeshift isolation unit for Covid-19 patients on the evening of May 27.

OC Kamruzzaman said Ronald Ricky Gomez, son-in-law of late Vernon, filed the case, accusing United Hospital authorities of murdering Vernon through negligence.

He said they were looking into the accusations.

Earlier, the Fire Service and Civil Defense had formed a five-member committee to investigate the fire and the subsequent deaths of the five patients.

United Hospital authorities have also launched an internal inquiry.

On May 28, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam had said that eight of the 11 fire extinguishers that were in that isolation unit had expired a month ago.

A writ was also filed on Monday with the High Court, seeking cancellation of the hospital's licence to operate.
