The parliament is going to witness a very short budget session this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Parliament sources said only those lawmakers who are required for the day-to-day activities of the House, will attend the session.
In addition, the question and answer session will not be conducted in the upcoming budget session like in previous times, but some bills will be placed, they said.
The budget session will begin on June 10 while Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will place the national budget for 2020-21 fiscal year the following day.
Chief Whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury Liton told Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday that the House is going to hold a 10 or 12 days' session for the budget.
It will be the eighth session of the current parliament.
"We have planned to make the session as short as possible for the health safety of our lawmakers."
The parliament will ensure physical distancing of the lawmakers due to Covid-19 and that is why MPs have to attend the session by rotation, he said.
"Certain lawmakers will attend the session on certain days and we will inform them accordingly," he said.
Parliament sources said President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the session, but no delegates will be allowed this year.
"Senior members of parliament have been advised not to take part in the session considering the risk of coronavirus infection," said a whip of the parliament.
As per the rules of procedure of parliament, the presence of 60 lawmakers, out of 350, is mandatory for ensuring quorum to start the sitting of parliament.
For the cause, Chief Whip Liton said, parliament will ensure the presence of 70 to 80 lawmakers daily.
On April 18, the seventh session of the parliament was held only for an hour, which was the shortest ever parliament session in the history of Bangladesh.
President Abdul Hamid prorogued the briefest session after it was called to meet the constitutional obligations amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Journalists not allowed
The Parliament Secretariat has requested all media outlets to cover the budget session through a live telecast of Sangsad Bangladesh Television instead of coming to the parliament.
No passes for journalists will be issued to cover the budget session this time due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, it was said in a press release on Monday.
However, one reporter from each media outlet will be able to collect budget documents from the media centre situated outside the parliament building, the press statement added.
