Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to eradicate homelessness by ensuring housing for all within Mujib Year.
Marking the historic March 7, the premier also placed a wreath at the portrait of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in Dhaka last morning, reports BSS.
She asked the Awami League leaders and supporters, to seek out the homeless people in their respective villages and localities for fulfilling the desire of Bangabandhu by ensuring homes for them within the Mujib Year while addressing a discussion organized by Awami League at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
“You [Awami League party workers] find out how many people remain homeless or landless in your own villages and areas. We [the government] will arrange homes for them. If you cannot spend money, I will. But we want to give them homes. This is our only desire [in this Mujib Year],” she said.
She said the government wants no one to remain homeless in this Mujib Year, set to be celebrated from March 17, 2020 to March 26, 2021, reports UNB.
She said her government has taken various projects like Ashrayan and housing projects for the homeless people and continues its efforts with such measures for them by following the footsteps of the father of the nation.
Referring to the historic March 7 speech, she said: “The March 7 speech of the Father of the Nation is the only speech which has been keeping up its appeal in the entire world for the last 49 years and it will not only continue to invigorate the countrymen, but also the people of the globe for ages.”
She said the government has ensured food security making Bangladesh as self-sufficient in food production, and has taken the healthcare services to the doorsteps of people and created a scope for education.
Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, said every leader and activist, as a follower of Mujib’s ideology, has a responsibility towards the country and the nation. “If you can carry it out, it would be fruitful.”
The prime minister said she would provide money anyhow to arrange houses for the homeless families if any leader and activist cannot spend money after finding out such people.
She asked her audience to spread her call to every leader and activist of Awami League across the country.
