PM: Wage social movement against terrorism

Update : 20 Jul 2016, 12:08 AM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday urged everyone to wage a social movement against terrorism and militancy to supplement government's efforts to eradicate this social menace from the country. “We are investigating and arresting the culprits, but this is not enough. A social movement is needed. Everybody has to be cautious – all of the people have to work unitedly with an anti-militancy and anti-terrorism attitude,” she said while addressing the 30th raising ceremony of Special Security Force (SSF) at the International Conference Centre in her office in Dhaka. She said her government would surely take as many actions as necessary against the culprits who are maligning Islam, a religion of peace. “We can't allow anyone to malign our religion, we will certainly take stern actions against those responsible, but a global awareness is also needed in this regard." Hasina said people of the country are pious and they believe in the religion. “Islam is a religion of peace, but these elements are putting the religion into question,” she said, referring to the recent terror attacks in Dhaka and Kishoreganj. The prime minister put emphasis on creating anti-terrorism and militancy movement from the grassroots level. “People's strength is the greatest strength, we have to resist terrorism and militancy keeping people with us.” With Gulshan and Sholakia terror attacks, secret killings and arson attacks, those who do not want an independent Bangladesh and its development are hatching conspiracies constantly, Hasina noted. She mentioned that terrorism and militancy have spread around the world. “At the ASEM Summit, I urged the global leaders to find out the root cause of this evil.” Hasina also asked law enforcement agencies to arrange for advance trainings for their troops keeping in mind the changing pattern of terrorism and militancy, as well as adopt newer technologies. “Each force has to take steps in this regard carefully.” The premier urged all parents to take good care of their children. She said children from well-off families are getting derailed though their demands hardly remain unfulfilled. She asked parents to spend more time with their children and learn more about their lives. “Besides providing proper education, parents will have to ensure that they are getting the right messages of religion.” Prime Minister's Security Affairs Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique and Principal Secretary M Abul Kalam Azad were present at the ceremony, among others, while SSF Director General Maj Gen M Safiqur Rahman delivered the welcome speech.
