3 Jamalpur al-Badr men receive death penalty

Update : 18 Jul 2016, 07:43 PM
A special tribunal headed by Justice Anwarul Haq sentenced the three al-Badr operatives - Ashraf Hossain, Abdul Hannan and Abdul Bari - to death and the rest to life in prison on Monday. The convicts with life imprisonment are Advocate Shamsul Alam alias Badar Bhai, former chief of Jamaat's Jamalpur district unit, Prof Sharif Ahmed alias Sharif Hossain, SM Yusuf Ali, Harun and Abul Hashem. They were charged with murder, abduction, confinement, torture, and arson attacks in the district during the Liberation War in 1971. Shamsul Alam and Yusuf Ali are in custody while the others are absconding. An estimated three million people were killed during the nine-month war while millions were forced to seek refuge in India. Suspected war criminals were put on trial after the Awami League-led government formed the International Crimes Tribunal in 2010. Most of the war criminals belong to Jamaat, which openly opposed Bangladesh's independence in 1971. The party claims that the tribunal falls short of international standard and accuses the government of carrying out a political vendetta, which the government denies.
