Outgoing US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat discussed political issues, emphasising  the Rohingya crisis and the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), during a meeting with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque.

The meeting was held on Wednesday. They also discussed the UN Security Council's role in the Rohingya issue, Bernicat told reporters after the meeting concluded, reports UNB.

In response to a question, she said her country wants a free, fair, and impartial general election in Bangladesh—to reflect the will of the people.

Bernicat also noted that the current government is committed to holding a free and inclusive election.

The 73rd UNGA session will open on September 18.

The first day of the high level General Debate will take place on September 25. The assembly is scheduled to last for nine working days.

President-elect of the 73rd UNGA session Maria Fernanda Espinosa, announced in July 2018 that the theme of the general debate will be: 'Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies.'
