The government has strongly condemned the recent attack on an official vehicle of the US Embassy in Dhaka and said action will be taken against the perpetrators of the "unfortunate incident", reports UNB.

The vehicle carrying US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat was attacked by a group of armed adult men, some on motorcycles, in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka on August 4.

According to a statement released by the US embassy the following day, there were no injuries to the ambassador, her drivers, or security staff; however, two security vehicles sustained some damage.

"We express our appreciation to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and security officials for their quick and professional response following the incident," the Embassy said in a statement.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry released its own statement on Thursday, saying police had immediately rushed to the spot and provided necessary protection to ensure the ambassador and her entourage remain unharmed.

"The Government of Bangladesh strongly condemns the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

“It is also committed to ensure safety and security of all Diplomatic Corps in Bangladesh. Upon completion of the investigation, appropriate actions will be taken.”

Two days after the attack, Ambassador Bernicat held a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at his residence in the city, at which State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque were also present.

Although the meeting lasted for an hour and 45 minutes, officials did not share what was discussed.
