“I condemn the killing of Abdul Hakim Shimul,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Unesco boss also said: “I trust that the authorities will succeed in bringing the journalist’s killers to justice, which is particularly important to promote freedom of expression and deter violence against media workers.”

Shimul was hit by a bullet fired by Shahjadpur Mayor Halimul Haque Miru during a clash between the supporters of Chhatra League President of Shahjadpur Government College unit Bijoy Mahmud and the supporters of the Mayor’s brother Pintu on February 2.

He died the following day while being taken to Dhaka.
Shimul's wife filed a case against 18, including Mayor Miru, for the murder. Police arrested Miru from Dhaka’s Shyamoli area on February 5.
