Journo shot during AL infighting dies
Abdul Hakim Shimul, upazila correspondent of the Daily Samakal, was shot in the head. Dr Shushanta Kumar, head of Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College’s neurosurgery department, said that the journalist had suffered brain haemorrhage due to his wounds. He died while being shifted to Dhaka around 1pm Friday, Sakhawat Memorial Hospital’s doctor Hafiz Rahman Milon confirmed. Police have arrested Mayor Halimul’s brothers Pintu and Mintu and seized the mayor’s shotgun. Journalist Shimul was hit by a bullet fired by Shahjadpur Mayor and district unit Awami League Organising Secretary Halimul Haque Miru during the clash. Hearing that Shahjadpur Government College unit Chhatra League President Bijoy Mahmud was attacked by the mayor’s brother Pintu, the supporters of Bijoy and local people cordoned off the mayor’s house and started hurling bricks. At one point, the mayor opened fire from his shotgun that left journalist Shimul injured. However, Mayor Halimul claimed that bullets were fired from both the sides. But the police in primary investigation have found that bullets were fired only from the mayor’s gun. Shahjadpur police station Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Haque said that Bijoy’s uncle Ershad Ali had filed a case against the mayor, his two brothers and nine others.
