The teachers and employees of non-government MPO-listed (monthly payment order) educational institutions on Monday called off their hunger strike following government assurance of meeting their demand for nationalization of the institutions.
Carrying Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's words of assurance, Secondary and Higher Secondary Division Secretary Md Sohrab Hossain and Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Md Alamgir went to meet the fasting teachers in front of National Press Club in Dhaka around 5:30pm.
Following that, the teachers withdrew their strike.
Joint General Secretary of the teachers association Md Robiul Islam told UNB over phone that they were calling off their programme by putting faith in the prime minister’s promise.
He said that the secretaries assured of meeting nationalization demand by next national budget announcement in June.
He also said their demand for proper increment and allowances for special days would be met within short period.
The teachers and employees started the hunger strike on January 15 as their demand for nationalizing all educational institutions having MPO facilities went unheeded even after a five-day sit-in since January 10.
