A tailor has died from smoke inhalation when a deadly fire broke out at a shopping mall in Chittagong on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Hasan, 28, who worked as a tailor on the third floor of Central Plaza at GEC intersection area in the city.
Sources at the fire service said the fire originated from the third floor of the five-storey shopping mall around 8:20am. The deadly blaze was put out after seven hours of frantic efforts, around 3pm.
Mostaque Ahmed Chowdhury, president of Chittagong Central Plaza Traders’ Association, said there were 18 tailor shops among a total of 37 shops on the third floor of the market.
“All the shops on the third floor of the market were burnt down. The extent of damage in the fire accident will be more than Tk2 crore,” Mostaque added.
Md Jashim Uddin, deputy assistant director at Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defence, told the Dhaka Tribune that the origin of the fire could not be ascertained immediately.
“Primarily, it seems that the fire originated in a tailor shop. However, we are not confirmed yet about the exact reason of the fire. On information, a total of 16 vehicles of six units rushed to the spot and doused the fire,” said Jashim.
