'Sell your wives if you do not have the money to buy toilets'

Update : 24 Jul 2017, 02:57 PM
In a bid to promote Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clean drive, a district magistrate from Bihar has asked the villagers to sell their wives if they do not have the money to build toilets at home. Bihar's Aurangabad District Magistrate Kanwal Tanuj stirred a huge controversy with his statement during his visit to Aurangabad, reports the India today. A video showed Tanuj trying to educate the villages about the bad affects of open defecation. He said: "Save the dignity of your women if you can. How poor are you? Raise your hands and tell me if the value of your wife is lower than Rs12,000. Listen to me first. Don't raise your hands." "What man would ask me to take the dignity of his wife for Rs12,000? Is there anyone like that?"When a villager told Tanuj that he does not have enough money to build a toilet, he said: "I will talk to you. If that is the case then go and sell your wife. If this is the mentality you have then go and sell your wife. So many people talk about advance payment, they get advance and then spend it on useless things." Last September, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar launched two schemes -- Har Ghar Nal Ka Jal, and Shauchalay Nirman, Ghar Ka Sammaan -- as part of his Seven Resolves of state government. The schemes were part of larger Clean India drive and will cover all towns and villages of the state by the end of 2019. Under the Shauchalay Nirman, Ghar Ka Sammaan, a beneficiary is given an aid of Rs12,000 by the state government for building toilets to end open defecation. District Magistrate Kanwal Tanuj was addressing the gathering about the same scheme.
