Dipu Moni taken to DMCH after falling ill in jail

Former education minister Dr Dipu Moni was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday morning after she fell ill at Munshiganj District Jail.

Muhammad Enayet Ullah, superintendent of Munshiganj District Jail, confirmed the matter.

Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Fazlu, who accompanied her to the hospital, said Dipu Moni fell ill at the jail early Monday. Following instructions from the prison authorities, she was taken to the emergency department of DMCH, where she arrived at around 8:15am.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, said Dipu Moni was brought to the emergency department after feeling unwell. She underwent a medical check-up and was later taken back to jail.

Dr Md Arifuzzaman, superintendent of Munshiganj General Hospital, said Dipu Moni has kidney, thyroid and allergy-related health conditions.

"Although her condition is not critical, our doctors felt she required more advanced treatment, so she was referred to Dhaka," he said.

Jail Superintendent Enayet Ullah said Dipu Moni has been receiving regular treatment for her existing medical conditions.

"When she felt unwell early Monday, she was first taken to Munshiganj General Hospital. The attending physicians later referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further evaluation," he added.

Dipu Moni, joint general secretary of the Awami League, previously served as foreign minister and later as education minister under the party-led government.

She has been in custody following the political developments after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on August 5, 2024, amid the July uprising.
