Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of the country was suspended after a wagon of an oil-laden train derailed in the Lawachara National Park area of Moulvibazar on the Dhaka–Sylhet–Chittagong railway route.
The accident occurred around 4:30pm on Friday while the oil tanker train was passing through the forest area of Lawachara National Park.
According to railway sources, the train was heading from Sylhet to Akhaura when one of its rear wagons suddenly derailed and fell off the tracks inside the forest area, disrupting rail communication with Sylhet.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka-bound intercity train "Jayantika Express", which was heading to Sylhet, became stranded at Srimangal Railway Station following the incident.
Confirming the matter, Srimangal Railway Station Master Shakhawat Hossain said: “A wagon of an oil-laden train derailed in the Lawachara forest around 4:30pm. The railway authorities have been informed. Rescue operations will take some time. A relief train has already departed from Kulaura.”
