A former union parishad member was hacked to death in a clash between two rival groups in Barguna on Tuesday.
The deceased was Shafiqul Islam Panu, 45, a former Patakata UP member.
At least six people from both sides, including his wife, were seriously injured in the clash.
The clash ensued around 9pm between supporters of current UP Member Motahar Mridha and former member Shafiqul in the Pakurgachia area of Aylapatakata union in Barguna Sadar upazila.
Locals said there had been a rivalry between the two groups since the last UP election.
Both groups, equipped with local weapons, engaged in a clash following a longstanding rivalry in the Pakurgachia Thandar Club area at night.
Seven of the injured were taken to Barguna Sadar Hospital, where the doctor declared Shafiqul dead.
Six injured were sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal in critical condition.
Chobi Akhter, the deceased's wife, said 20 to 25 people broke down the door to their house and dragged her husband out, hacking him to death with sharp weapons.
When she tried to save her husband, they beat her up too, she added.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Abdul Halim said: “The incident took place between the supporters of Motahar and Shafiqul over a pre-election enmity. Police went to the scene and brought the situation under control. We rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital.”
The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy. Operations are underway to arrest those involved in the incident, he added, he added.
