About 2 hours before the end of the 38-hour strike called by the Faridpur Zilla bus owners association, buses were seen plying on the highway in the district.
Meanwhile, the three-wheelers were running freely on the road amid the strike which was called to stop the movement of three-wheelers.
As part of BNP's planned divisional rally, Faridpur district unit BNP organized a rally on Komorpur Abdul Aziz Institution's premises, around 6km away from the district town.
Even though the highway was empty throughout the day, at around 6pm, Purbasha transport was running on the highway adjacent to the rally ground and sales of ticket began as well.
Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus counter employee Mamun Hossain said: “We open the counter for ticket sales from evening. However, I did not sell any tickets before 8 pm. The eight o'clock bus will go to Dhaka via Padma Bridge.”
Golam Md Nasir, general secretary of district owners association, said: “Bus movement resumed as the time expired as per our announcement. If no action is taken by the government to ban three-wheelers on the highway, we will announce more intense strikes in the future.”
BNP said the party organized the rally to denounce the price hike of daily essentials and fuels, the death of five party men in previous police action in Bhola, Narayanganj, Munshiganj and Jashore, and to ensure the freedom of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Though bus communication remained halted between Faridpur and the rest of the country since Friday morning, the BNP leaders and activists came to the district town from different areas by train, launches, boats, trucks and small vehicles like human haulers, auto rickshaws, three-wheelers, motorbikes, and micro-buses.
As the vehicles and auto-rickshaws were not allowed to go towards Komorpur Abdul Aziz Institution from the town, many BNP leaders and workers were forced to walk around 6km on foot to take part in the rally.
