Despite scattered rainfall across the country, water level of all the major rivers will fall which will lead to improvement of flood situation countrywide soon.
As of 9am on Wednesday, Among 101 water level monitoring stations of the country, 47 observed a rising trend of water levels in different rivers at 9am on Monday. Forty-nine stations observed a decreasing trend and five remained unchanged.
However, currently 17 rivers were flowing above the danger lines at 27 points across the country.
According to the Flood Forecast and Warning Centre (FFWC) flood situation is improving in northern districts due to water level decrease of Brahmaputra and Jamuna River, which is to continue.
Flood situation in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur, Natore, Sirajganj, Tangail, Naogaon, and Brahmanbaria may improve in the next 24 hours.
In the central region, the flood situation remains unchanged because of the stable situation of mighty river Padma. The river may remain unchanged in the next 48 hours.
The water level of the rivers surrounding Dhaka is increasing and flowing above the danger line. This rising trend will continue in the next 24 hours. But this rising water level only can submerge river adjacent low land of the capital, said FFWC officials.
FFWC said, the flood situation of Manikganj, Munshiganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Chandpur, Rajbari, Shariatpur, Narayanganj, and Dhaka may remain unchanged in the next 24 hours.
According to FFWC, as of 9am on Wednesday, water level of Brahmaputra and Jamuna is declining which will continue in the next 24 hours.
Water level of Ganges is stable, which will remain unchanged in the next 48 hours.
On the other hand, the water level of the rivers of the Meghna basin of north-eastern region except Kushiara is rising which will continue over the next 24 hours.
Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of FFWC, told Dhaka Tribune: “There is no random heavy rain in the coming days. Scattered rain will not stop water level from decreasing.”
“Water level will fall slowly this week, a rapid fall of water level will be observed next week,” he said.
Rivers surrounding Dhaka flowing above danger line
Water levels of the surrounding rivers of Dhaka city are flowing above the danger line except Buriganga. The Balu River was flowing 9cm above the danger mark at Demra point at 9am Wednesday. Shitalakhya was flowing 8cm above the danger line at Narayanganj point, and Turag was flowing 23cm above the danger line at Mirpur point at the same time. Tongi Khal (canal) was flowing 16cm above the danger line at Tongi point.
Padma remains unchanged
Padma is flowing 114cm above the danger level at Goalundo point, 71cm at Bhagyakul point, 65cm at Mawa point and 9cm at Sureswar point. In the last 24 hours, the water level of Padma was decreasing slightly at all the points except Sureshwar.
Weather forecast
Till now monsoon is active over Bangladesh. Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasts different levels of rainfall across the country in the next 24 hours.
According to BMD weather forecast, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions.
At many places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, and Chittagong divisions and at a few places over Khulna, and Barisal divisions moderately heavy to heavy falls are likely to occur.
About the monsoon, BMD said the axis of monsoon trough runs through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to Assam across Northern part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and weak to moderate over North Bay.
