Narayanganj teacher Shyamal Kanti sent to prison

A Narayanganj court has sent Shyamal Kanti Bhakt, headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj to prison for allegedly taking bribe from a teacher at the school. Morsheda Begum, who teaches English at the school, claimed Shyamal had taken Tk1,35,000 from her as bribe for including her in the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system which ensures various government facilities. Narayanganj's Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court issued the arrest warrant on Wednesday. Shyamal surrendered to the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta on Wednesday afternoon. He denied all charges pressed against him and said these were all part of a conspiracy to defame and stigmatise him by a group with vested interests. "The case claims I took the bribe in December, when the school was closed for winter vacation. Why would the school be open during vacation and how would she be able to come in and bribe me?" Shyamal asked. He continued: "The chargesheet was framed by the police to appease influential people with vested interests." Bandar police station's Inspector (investigation) Harunur Rashid filed the chargesheet against Shyamal on April 17.

The school's headmaster was dragged into the limelight last year after he had been assaulted by a mob and forced to do squats holding his ears by local lawmaker AKM Salim Osman. Shyamal was also removed from his position on May 17, but the Ministry of Education reinstated him and dissolved the school’s managing committee. An inquiry commission found that the assault on Shyamal was instigated by several members of the managing committee over school development work. According to the case documents, Morsheda bribed Shyamal Tk35,000 on December 24, 2014 for including her in the MPO system. She later gave another Tk100,000 in bribe as per the headmaster's demand. However, Shyamal did not send Morsheda's application for being included in the MPO system to the concerned authorities and denied taking money from her last year. Morsheda filed a case against Shyamal on July 14.
