Nor’wester knocks out 6,000 cell towers

About 6,000 communication network towers went offline across the country after a nor’wester hit the capital on Sunday night.

Nearly 50 per cent of all the network sites have no power, as commercial power supply fro the Power Development Board (PWD) stopped.

Banglalink's Chief Corporate and Regulatory Officer, Taimur Rahman, said nearly 2,300 of their Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers are inoperative.

"Half of them are currently being run with the help of generators. Mobile phone users in Dhaka and adjacent areas are facing some network issues," he said.

Ikram Ahmed, vice-president of Robi, said there are network problems because the PDB power remains off. "There have been some network issues since yesterday as some of our network sites are currently offline," he said.'

Deputy General Manager of Teletalk, Saifur Rahman Khan, said about 250 of their BTS towers are  out of service following Sunday’s storm.
