At least ten houses, four motorcycles, two mini trucks, and one trolley belonging to supporters of elected Upazila Chairman Monir Hossain Mia were vandalized in Gournadi upazila on Monday in post-polls violence.
Following the upazila election, the supporters of defeated chairman candidate Harisur Rahman allegedly attacked and harassed the supporters of the winning candidate.
At that time 20 people were injured.
Elected Chairman Monir Hossain Miah said: "After losing in the election, supporters of Harisur Rahman attacked my workers and supporters, looted homes, and set houses on fire. If Harisur is not arrested promptly, the law and order situation in Gournadi may continue to deteriorate."
Harisur Rahman counter-alleged that the elected chairman's activists had attacked his supporters in various areas of the upazila, severely injuring 10 to 15 workers.
On the other hand, members of RAB and BGB, along with the police, visited the scene at night after receiving the news of the attack and vandalism while on election patrol.
Gournadi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain said that he has not received any written complaint about the post-election attack and violence. Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received, subject to investigation.
Newly elected upazila chairman Monir Hossain, along with other leaders and activists, rushed to the municipal councillor's house on hearing the news of the vandalism.
They sought the intervention of senior administration officials to apprehend criminals Harisur Rahman and his associates within the next 24 hours. He also threatened to announce a strict program if necessary.
