Seven students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) have been suspended from academic activities for varying periods and permanently from residential halls, while 12 more have been temporarily suspended only from residential halls, all of whom are former leaders of Cuet’s Chhatra League branch.
These decisions were announced on Monday in 21 separate notices signed by Md Mahbubul Alam, the secretary of the disciplinary committee and director of the Cuet Student Welfare Department.
These decisions were made in an emergency meeting, the 281st session of the university’s disciplinary committee.
The notice said the disciplinary committee met last Tuesday and took action based on written complaints, show-cause responses from the accused students, and other evidence.
Among the suspended students, four have been suspended from academic activities for two years, while the remaining three have been suspended for one year. They have also been permanently expelled from their residential halls.
The students suspended for two years are:
- Former Cuet Chhatra League general secretary Bijoy Hossain
- Former vice president Md Imam Hossain
- Former organizational secretary Azharul Islam
- Former joint general secretary Mohammad Toufikur Rahman
The students suspended for one year are:
- Former joint general secretary Soumik Joy
- Former organizational secretaries Ashikul Islam and Tahsin Ishtiaq
The 12 students temporarily suspended from residential halls are:
- Former vice presidents Tofaiya Rabbi, Md Sadiquzzaman, Yusuf Abdullah, Md Tanvir Jony, Iftikhar Sajid, and Shakil Farazi
- Former joint general secretaries Talha Zubair, Mahmudul Hasan, Md Rifat Hossain, and Moinul Haque
- Former organizational secretaries Irfanul Karim and Abdur Rahman
Additionally, two students have only been given a warning:
- Former vice president Chinmoy Kumar Debnath
- Former joint general secretary Md Rakib Uddin Chowdhury
Md Mahbubul Alam, the director of the Student Welfare Department, said: “We received several written complaints about activities against the interests of general students and violations of campus discipline.
"The accused students were asked to respond, and after reviewing their replies and the available evidence, the disciplinary committee decided on these punishments.”
