Bangladeshi universities have once again struggled to break into the top 800 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2025.
Despite the presence of 16 universities from Bangladesh in the rankings, none have managed to secure a spot within the top 800.
While Bangladesh failed to make a significant impact, neighboring countries India and Pakistan performed better, with India securing 22 spots and Pakistan 9 within the top 800 universities globally.
The rankings were released on Wednesday and are based on key performance indicators, including teaching quality, research output, citations, and international student representation.
Among the Bangladeshi universities, five institutions - Jahangirnagar University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Daffodil International University, Jessore University of Science and Technology, and North South University - were ranked in the 801–1000 range.
Several others, including the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), Brac University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), found themselves in the 1001–1200 range.
Further down the list, Jagannath University ranked below 1500, showcasing the disparity in global competitiveness of Bangladeshi institutions.
At the top of the rankings, the University of Oxford retained its position as the top-ranked university, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place, and Harvard University in third.
