DMP: Jamaat-Shibir men assaulted police after Sayedee’s death

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on Tuesday claimed that the Jamaat-Shibir men assaulted some police personnel and vandalized vehicles in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area after the death of Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

They have also set fire to two motorcycles in front of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the commissioner said at a press briefing at DMP’s Media Centre at around 11am.

“They took position near BSMMU after Fajr prayers. They also went Live on Facebook and asked everyone to join the protest. Later, the police managed to bring the situation under control,” he added.

Leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir staged a protest around the ambulance carrying the body of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

They demanded that Sayedee’s namaz-e-janaza be held in Dhaka. Police later fired tear gas and sound grenades to disperse them.

The Jamaat-Shibir men alleged that several members were injured during the incident.

Sayedee passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment at BSMMU. He was 83.

He died at the hospital at 8:40pm.
