Death of domestic help: Journo, wife to be interrogated at jail gate

A Dhaka court on Wednesday denied bail and remand applications for a journalist and his wife in a case filed over the death of a domestic help due to negligence.

The court has ordered the police to question the accused at the jail gate within the next three days.

The accused are Syed Ashfaqul Haque, The Daily Star's executive editor, and his wife, Tania Khandaker.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibul Haque passed the order rejecting the bail appeal filed by defence lawyer Ashraf Ul Alam.
The court also rejected the police petition for a five-day remand to interrogate the couple in custody.

Earlier, Mohammadpur police station Sub Inspector (SI) Nazmul Hasan, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought a five-day remand.

Earlier in the day, the deceased’s father Lukesh Oran filed the case under Section 304 (A) of the Penal Code.

On Tuesday, a teenage domestic help named Preeti Oran died after falling from the eighth floor of a residential building in the capital's Mohammadpur.

The 15-year-old girl used to work at the residence of Ashfaqul. Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
