One held for defacing portrait of Bangabandhu, PM Hasina

Police have detained a young man, named Amin Dewan, for defacing a joint portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Chandpur.

Amin Dewan was apprehended on Sunday from the Shapath Chattar area in the city following an allegation lodged by Chandpur model police station Sub-Inspector Md Selim Ullah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abdur Rashid confirmed.  

Earlier, district Awami League Office Assistant Badal Gazi registered an official complaint at the police station. 

Amin Dewan, son of Zinnah Dewan, hailing from Koralia Road in the city, exhibited unusual behaviour following his detention, reinforcing the preliminary assumption of mental instability, said OC Mohammad Abdur Rashid.

Some unidentified individuals tore the joint portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina near the flag stand of the district Awami League office on Friday which later came to the attention of the district Awami League General Secretary and a freedom fighter Abu Nayem Patwary Dulal.

Following a review of CCTV footage, an unidentified individual was seen vandalizing and tearing the portrait around 4pm on Friday, then Amin Dewan was detained. 

OC Mohammad Abdur Rashid said that an ongoing investigation is being conducted into the matter and his family has been informed. 

Further action will be taken following Amin Dewan's questioning, he added. 

General Secretary Abu Nayem Patwary Dulal commented: "Such activities can cause significant problems for our country and our party. If anyone else is involved in this act, they will also be brought under the purview of the law."
