During Monday’s clashes between quota reform protesters and Chhatra League members at Dhaka University, a young man was seen firing at the demonstrators, which also reportedly resulted in a Chhatra League leader getting injured.
The event occurred at around 6:15pm in front of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, raising questions about the identity of the armed youth.
His name is Hasan Molla, hailing from Gopalganj. He is a former vice president of the Dhaka north Chhatra League unit and was a student at Dhaka College from the 2006-07 session.
Currently, he is a major contractor for the Bangladesh Water Development Board and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
Hasan’s uncle Molla Abu Kauser was a former president of the Swechasebak League, the volunteer wing of the ruling Awami League, and was expelled due to involvement in a casino scandal.
Sources say Hasan, empowered by his uncle, has amassed immense wealth by intimidating various institutions with weapons. If he was not given contracting work, he would resort to violence and shooting. There have been previous allegations of him shooting people.
According to a colleague, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Hasan has two guns, neither of which is licensed. He uses these weapons primarily for his contracting business, coercing institutions into awarding him tenders.
Hasan had previously injured several people, the colleague said, adding that through his contracting business, Hasan had accumulated considerable wealth, including two resorts and four flats.
