Power generation at the Kaptai Karnafuli Hydro Power Station in Rangamati has reached a six-month high due to the increased water level of Kaptai Lake from heavy rainfall.

As of 9am on Tuesday, the plant generated a total of 164MW of electricity from four out of its five units, said ATM Abduzzaher, the manager of the Karnafuli Hydro Power Station.

"If the water level continues to rise, power generation is likely to increase further," he said. Currently, Unit no 3 of the power plant is closed.

Meanwhile, engineers in the control room of the Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant said that at this time of year, the water level of Kaptai Lake should be 84.16 feet above mean sea level (MSL) according to the rule curve, but it measured 83.69 feet MSL on Tuesday.

This is the highest water level recorded in recent days. However, Kaptai Lake has a total water capacity of 109 feet MSL.
