The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found evidence of embezzlement of Tk1,000 crore by National Board of Revenue (NBR) First Secretary Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal.

Based on the evidence, the commission applied to the court to freeze all immovable properties and bank accounts of Mahmud Faisal.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain on Thursday ordered the seizure of his assets and bank accounts after a hearing.

The properties ordered to be confiscated include a flat of Mahmud Faisal in Dhaka and two 10-katha plots. Besides, the court ordered the authorities concerned to seize savings certificates worth Tk2,55,00,000 in the names of him and his wife.

ACC Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said the NBR first secretary became the owner of huge wealth through bribery and corruption. The ACC is investigating it.

The commission has found that the NBR official accumulated illegal wealth worth Tk1,000 crore.

First, an ACC investigation team discovered his movable and immovable properties, including one flat, a residential plot in Dhaka, and savings certificates worth Tk16 crore.

In a written application, the commission informed the court that Mahmud Faisal had transacted bribes, misusing his power. He opened more than 700 bank accounts in his and his relatives' names to conceal the sources of his income through corruption.

According to the order, the authorities will have to freeze Tk6.96 crore in 87 bank accounts of 14 people, including Mahmud Faisal, and Tk2.55 crore in 15 savings accounts in the names of seven people, including Mahmud Faisal.

The court also ordered to seize immovable assets in the names of four people, including Faisal's wife.

According to the commission's findings, the immovable property includes 0.0285 acres of land worth Tk75 lakh in Bhatara of the capital, four plots in Purbachal of Narayanganj, a flat worth Tk1 crore in Siddheshwari, Dhaka, and 10 acres of land worth Tk4.5 crore in Khilgaon.
