Why is the Miyazaki mango so expensive?

Miyazaki mangoes are known for their exceptional cultivation and luxurious quality

Update : 16 Jun 2024, 04:24 PM

Originating in the picturesque region of Kyushu in Japan, Miyazaki mangoes have gained international acclaim not just for their taste, but also for the heavy price tag on them.

These vibrant, ruby-coloured fruits, often referred to as "Eggs of the Sun" have captured the attention and taste buds of mango lovers.

Globally, they are being sold at roughly Tk4 lakh per kilogram. But what is so special about this mango for it to be so expensive? For comparison, Bangladesh’s local Aamropali or Himshagor varieties go for around Tk100 per kg.

The journey of a Miyazaki mango from tree to market is unlike mass-produced fruits; they are cultivated with extraordinary care.

Each mango is nurtured individually, often covered in small nets that protect them from pests and ensure they fall gently when ripe, preventing any sort of fall damage.

The mangoes are grown in greenhouses where temperature, humidity and sunlight are regulated to create the perfect growing conditions.

Farmers often hand-pollinate the mango flowers, a labour-intensive process that increases fruit yield and quality.

The painstaking methods used to grow Miyazaki mangoes naturally result in a limited supply. The strict selection criteria mean that only a fraction of these make it to the premium market.

This scarcity drives up the price, especially as global demand for luxury and exotic fruits increases.

The ultimate justification for the steep price of Miyazaki mangoes lies in their exceptional quality. These mangoes are celebrated for their sweetness, with a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture that sets them apart from other varieties.

The visual appeal of these mangoes greatly adds to their value. They are carefully packaged in elegant boxes, making them a treat for the eyes as well as the taste buds. This presentation boosts their status as a luxury item, perfect for the most selective buyers.

In Japan, fruit is often given as a gift and symbolizes hospitality, respect and celebration. Miyazaki mangoes, with their high price and beautiful appearance, reflect these cultural values.
