The authorities on Sunday temporarily implemented a one-way traffic system on the Bangabandhu Bridge to cope with traffic before Eid-ul-Azha.
Thousands of homebound people, including many apparel workers, crowded bus and train stations and launch terminals in and around Dhaka. This led to increased traffic on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway.
A 10-km gridlock was created on the east end of the bridge. Due to heavy traffic in the morning, vehicles heading towards Dhaka on the Bangabandhu Bridge were halted, allowing only those going north to proceed. This continued until 9am, when traffic on the highway returned to normal.
Over 700 police officers are actively working to alleviate the congestion.
Elenga highway police outpost in-charge Mir Sajedur Rahman said traffic towards the north has intensified, and police are working continuously to ease the congestion.
