Atishi Singh, Delhi’s education minister and a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been named the successor to former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Following Kejriwal’s resignation amid ongoing political turmoil, Atishi, aged 42, is set to become the youngest chief minister in the history of Delhi.
This appointment makes her the third woman to hold the position in the capital, alongside West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee, the only other woman currently serving as a state chief minister in India.
Atishi has long been a key figure in the AAP, known for her role in shaping Delhi’s educational policies and reforms.
She has been instrumental in the party’s growth and in implementing its vision for a more progressive governance model.
Her promotion to the top post signals the party’s focus on continuity in education and social reforms while also representing a generational shift in leadership.
Background
Atishi, born in 1981, comes from an academic family in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, are professors at Delhi University.
She attended Springdales School in New Delhi before pursuing her undergraduate studies at Delhi University’s prestigious St Stephen’s College.
Later, she was awarded a Chevening scholarship, which allowed her to attend the University of Oxford, where she completed her master’s degree.
Atishi’s academic achievements continued when she became a Rhodes Scholar in 2005 at Oxford's Magdalen College, focusing on education and public policy.
Political career
Atishi's political career is closely tied to the rise of AAP.
She was one of the party’s founding members and played a critical role in drafting AAP’s 2013 manifesto, helping shape its vision for reform.
Her focus on education has been central to the party’s governance in Delhi, where she served as an advisor to Kejriwal’s government, primarily responsible for the overhaul of the capital’s public school system.
She is particularly credited for the "Happiness Curriculum," which aims to promote emotional well-being and mental health among students.
Atishi’s contributions to the Delhi government's education reforms were widely recognized both within India and internationally.
Under her leadership, the Delhi public school system saw improved infrastructure, teacher training, and innovative programs designed to encourage holistic development among students.
In 2020, Atishi won the Kalkaji seat in the Delhi Assembly with a margin of over 11,000 votes.
Her influence further expanded when Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was arrested in connection with a liquor policy case, and she was brought into the cabinet to take on more responsibilities.
Since then, she has become one of the most visible leaders in the party.
Atishi’s appointment
Kejriwal’s resignation came as a shock to many within the political community.
His departure followed mounting pressure from multiple fronts, including allegations of corruption and growing unrest within the party.
Atishi’s appointment to succeed him demonstrates the AAP’s commitment to maintaining continuity while preparing for the challenges ahead.
As the youngest chief minister, Atishi will face several hurdles, including navigating a volatile political landscape, strengthening her party’s position ahead of future elections, and continuing Kejriwal’s legacy of reform, especially in education.
Additionally, Atishi will have to address the internal issues within AAP and deal with opposition attacks, especially as she takes on a more prominent role nationally.
Her appointment is a clear signal that the AAP is banking on its younger generation of leaders to steer the party forward.
With Atishi at the helm, the party is expected to maintain its focus on progressive reforms, particularly in education, while broadening its national reach.
