Voter turnout in the sixth phase of Indian general elections 2024 stood at 63.37% with the female voters outnumbering the male voters for the second time in a row by 3%.
According to data released by the Indian Election Commission on Tuesday, the female voter turnout stood at 64.95%, while the male voter turnout was 61.95%. This follows the previous trend when female voters surpassed males by 1.52% in phase 5.
The sixth phase of the elections, held on May 25, saw participation from 58 parliamentary constituencies across eight states and Union Territories, with 889 candidates contesting.
The poll body stressed the accuracy of the voting process by providing detailed data for each constituency, making it clear that “nobody can change the data of votes polled,” reports Times of India.
West Bengal emerged as the state with the highest overall voter turnout at 82.71%. The state also saw the highest female voter turnout at 83.83%, significantly higher than the male turnout of 81.62%.
Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest overall voter turnout at 54.04%, with female voter participation at 57.12%, notably higher than the 51.31% male turnout.
Jharkhand reported a high turnout among those categorized as others/third gender at 37.93%, with female voter turnout at 65.94% and male turnout closely behind at 64.87%.
Bihar showed a substantial gender difference, with 62.95% of women voting compared to 51.95% of men. Odisha had a marginally higher female voter turnout at 74.86% compared to 74.07% for men.
Bihar, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh consistently reported higher female voter turnout in both phases.
