Another shipment of ilish has been sent to neighbouring India ahead of Durga Puja.
The 2,800-kg fish consignment was exported to Agartala, India through Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria at around 4pm on Tuesday.
Some more ilish shipments are scheduled to go to Agartala via Akhaura this week, according to sources at the port.
Ilish exports from Bangladesh to India started earlier this month.
Bangladeshi exporting company Fish Bazar, which is based in Dhaka’s Jatrabari, has permission to export 50,000kg of ilish.
It exported the fish while C&F agent Khalifa Enterprise handled customs clearing.
“There is a huge demand for ilish in Agartala. We can export more if the traders in Agartala want,” said Shahnewaz Mia, a representative of the agent company.
Agartala-based importer Bimal Roy Pintu said the fish had been bought at $10 per kilogram. Although the price was high right now, his business wanted to sell ilish at a small profit to the customers of Tripura, he added.
Bangladesh will export 2,950 tons of ilish to India this season, most of which will be sold in West Bengal markets.
Akhaura Land Port Revenue Officer Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury said traders had till September 30 to export ilish to the neighbouring country.
