Taslima Nasrin, a self-exiled Bangladeshi writer currently living in India, has been sued by a Swedish poet and dramatist for spreading false information about him on social media.
Anisur Rahman, a Bangladeshi expatriate writer, filed a libel suit with Swedish police on Tuesday, alleging spreading false information, personal attack, and slander.
Taslima stated that she is unaware of the case, but that she did not lie in her controversial article.
"If a liar files a case, his lies will be exposed a little more in public," she added.
In 2017, an article by Taslima was published in a news portal in Dhaka under the headline "Nakal Dunia".
Various "negative comments" were made, including the names of Orne Ruth, the former editor-in-chief of Sweden's Dagens Nyheter newspaper, and Anisur Rahman, among others
Recently, Anisur Rahman criticized some expatriate writers and bloggers without mentioning their names in one of his articles. Then a new discussion started on social media about that old writing of Taslima
He alleged that some bloggers and online activists in different countries started using Taslima as a "source" and making "offensive comments and personal attacks" on him.
Asked why he filed the case after all this time, Anisur said: "I want to protect the right to protest against lies and to seek redressal from security threats and professional harm due to false propaganda, even if it is delayed."
“But I could not spend the necessary time on this issue. At the same time, it took me some time to consult with my well-wishers and colleagues at home and abroad, and to look into the legal aspects and seek legal advice,” he observed.
Taslima Nasrin, who has a degree in medicine, became popular after she started writing in the 1990's.
In the face of constant militant threats, Taslima sought refuge in the United States with the help of a non-governmental organization.
After being forced to leave Bangladesh in 1994 following the publication of the novel "Lajja" about the oppression of Hindus in Bangladesh, Taslima is now living in India after visiting several countries.
