Stalin, Gandhi, Nehru ‘return’ in India’s Tamil Nadu cabinet

All in a name? Gandhi and Nehru will report to Stalin in the newly-minted cabinet

Update : 07 May 2021, 07:37 PM

In an interesting move, India’s newly-minted Tamil Nadu cabinet will feature namesakes of three great world leaders – Joseph Stalin, Mahatma Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The once-in-a-lifetime situation developed when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party won the recent election in Tamil Nadu.

The party’s leader, MK Stalin, named after late Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, was sworn in as the new chief minister on Friday, according to Indian media.

Stalin proposed KN Nehru as the minister for Municipal Administration in charge of Urban and Water Supply and R Gandhi as the minister for Handlooms and Textiles, Khadi and Village Industries Board, and Boodhan and Gramadhan.

KN Nehru, DMK’s principal secretary and party veteran, contested the fifth straight elections from the Tiruchi West constituency.

The veteran leader was named after Jawaharlal Nehru by his father, who was a staunch congressman.

R Gandhi was elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Ranipet constituency as a DMK candidate first in 1996.
