Police have arrested a 21-year-old man for raping and killing his mother in Karnataka state of India.
Shivappa, a resident of Vanahalli village in Dharwad district of Karnataka, was arrested by police in Gangibavi village of Haveri district in the same state on Saturday, reports the Times of India.
Karnataka-based online news portal the News Minute quotes family members of the victim as saying she had been in a relationship with a man after her husband’s death, and her son did not approve of the relationship. The woman’s husband had died 15 years ago.
Locals of the area said Shivappa fought with his mother over her relationship on multiple occasions. Shiggaon police said that over a week before the murder, the 21-year-old man had argued with his mother and demanded that she break off her relationship, according to the online news portal.
Police said the woman’s son allegedly forced her to drink alcohol after she returned from work in the fields on November 12. He then dragged her into the fields near Gangibhavi Road.
An argument ensued and the man allegedly pushed his mother to the ground and raped her before strangling her to death.
According to police sources quoted by Times of India, Shivappa’s mother lost her husband a year ago. Subsequently, she allegedly entered a sexual relationship with her son and other men.
Angered by her relationships with other men, Shivappa at one stage raped and killed her, police said in the First Information Report (FIR) as per the Indian newspaper.
