Nadiya Hussain, a celebrity British-Bangladeshi baker and the 2015 Great British Bake Off winner, has revealed that she was sexually abused by a relative in Bangladesh at the age of 5, reports The Guardian.
Nadiya, who is also an author and presenter, did a program in May about her struggles with anxiety, in which she discovered that she probably suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In an interview ahead of the publication of her memoir, the 34-year-old told the Mail on Sunday's You magazine, her PTSD was linked to another incident she had never previously spoken publicly about – being sexually assaulted by a relative in Bangladesh.
Nadiya said: "I've only told my sisters recently and, growing up, I had a close friend at school who I told. It turned out a very similar thing had happened to her.
"It's important to talk about it because it probably happens much more than we care to talk about.
"If that happened to my children, I don't even want to say what I would do. I have no words."
During the interview, Nadiya also reveals how she was bullied at school for being "too dark."
Nadiya said that one evening after school she had planned to kill herself but had been interrupted by the news that her mother was pregnant with her brother, Shak, and had decided to live for his sake.
