A pregnant singer was shot dead while singing at a family event on Tuesday evening at Kanga village in Pakistan’s Sindh province.
According to BBC, it is not clear exactly what the circumstances were around the death of Samira Sindhu, 28.
A man, named Tariq Jatoi, reportedly shot Samira because she would not stand up while singing, but he has said he shot her “by accident while firing in the air.”
Samira was eight months pregnant. As cited by BBC, Samira’s husband Ashiq Sammoo said in a police complaint that a man (Tariq Jatoi) at the celebration had pointed a gun at his wife and "threateningly ordered her to stand up and sing." When she reportedly said she was pregnant and could not stand Tariq shot her, Ashiq added.
Tariq Jatoi has been arrested in connection with the death, writes BBC. He told journalists outside court that he had “fired in the air in celebration and a bullet hit the singer by mistake.” He was remanded in custody.
Musicians have held protests in Pakistan to demand justice for Samira.
They have demanded that two men who were also present at the scene should also be arrested, reports BBC.
Samira was a locally known singer who had produced at least eight albums of Sindhi folk and Sufi music but her main source of income was to sing at family events.
Her autopsy result and Tariq Jatoi’s blood alcohol test result are expected to be examined in court, according to BBC.
