A firefighter on Saturday recovered his daughter’s body from the ruins of the apartment building that collapsed in Miami, Florida in the US last week.

Stella Cattarossi is the third child to be recovered from the wreckage of Champlain Towers South apartment. She was with her mother, grandparents and an aunt visiting from Argentina, reports BBC.

The child’s father had kept watch at the site of the collapse for the past nine days. He was warned when rescue crews approached the section of the building where his daughter had been staying.

"When he was made aware that we were close to where his loved one may have been, then he stood side by side with some of his other fellow firefighters," Miami Fire Rescue Capt Ignatius Carroll told WPLG, as quoted by BBC.

The child’s father covered her body with his jacket and placed a small US flag over her before carrying her out.

Stella’s body and one other recovered on Saturday took the death toll from the collapse to 22. A total 126 people are still missing.

On Friday, the mayor of Miami-Dade County ordered the demolition of the surviving structure of the building as it posed a risk to rescue teams.

No one has been rescued alive from the wreckage since after the first few hours of the collapse on June 24.
