The United States has ordered elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli to move toward the Middle East, marking a gradual increase in Washington’s military posture amid the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran, according to reporting by Al Jazeera and The Associated Press.

The deployment involves Marines based in Okinawa, Japan, who are travelling aboard the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship capable of launching ground operations and supporting expeditionary forces in conflict zones.

According to The Associated Press, which cited a US official speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military plans, elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the USS Tripoli -- homeported in Sasebo in Japan’s Nagasaki Prefecture -- have been ordered to the Middle East.

The development suggests that Washington is gradually strengthening its military presence in the region as tensions rise following the escalation of hostilities involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

However, US officials emphasized that the deployment does not necessarily signal an imminent ground operation.

Marine Expeditionary Units are designed for a wide range of missions, including amphibious landings, crisis response, evacuation of civilians, and reinforcing security at embassies during emergencies.

The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, one of the US military’s forward-deployed rapid response forces in the Indo-Pacific, operates regularly across the region but can be redirected to global hotspots when necessary.

Images released by the US military show that the USS Tripoli and accompanying vessels had been operating in the Pacific Ocean in recent days.

Commercial satellite imagery cited by media reports showed the warship sailing alone near Taiwan earlier this week, placing it more than a week’s journey from waters near Iran.

The deployment was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, while further details were confirmed through reporting by The Associated Press and Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, the US Navy already maintains a significant presence in the Middle East.

Earlier this week, 12 US naval vessels, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and eight destroyers, were operating in the Arabian Sea.

If the USS Tripoli joins that group, it would become one of the largest US warships currently operating in the region, second only to the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The United States also maintains a large network of military bases across the Middle East.

One of the most significant facilities is Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which typically hosts around 8,000 US troops and serves as a major hub for American air operations in the region.

The movement of the Marines and amphibious assault ship is widely viewed by analysts as part of a broader effort by Washington to reinforce its regional posture while maintaining flexibility for potential crisis response as the conflict continues to unfold.
