Myanmar’s military regime blocked key roads in Thandwe Township, southern Rakhine State, effectively trapping residents as fierce clashes with the Arakan Army (AA) continue.
The travel restrictions were imposed shortly after the United League of Arakan, the AA’s political wing, issued an urgent call for civilians and international organizations to evacuate Buthidaung, Maungdaw, and Thandwe townships, reports Irrawaddy.
The regime’s roadblocks primarily affect the Thandwe-Gwa-Yangon route, with orders to shoot on sight any villagers attempting to flee via the major river route to Thandwe town.
This follows the unprovoked artillery strike on Lin Thi village in Shwe Hlay on May 14, which resulted in the deaths of nine residents and triggered a mass exodus.
Residents of Shwe Hlay, located 32km north of Thandwe town, have been using the Sinkaung-Kinmaw river route to escape the ongoing fighting. However, the regime’s restrictions have left many unable to flee.
Despite the evacuation of staff from the nearby Tha Htay Chaung hydropower project by the regime in early May, local residents remain trapped, with access to safer areas severely limited.
The situation has further deteriorated as regime troops intensify shelling and bombing of residential areas in Thandwe Township since early May.
Tens of thousands of residents from at least ten villages in Shwe Hlay and around the Tha Htay Chaung project have been displaced, seeking refuge in Thandwe town and other villages.
The regime is allowing only sick residents and their caregivers to leave Thandwe. Residents must submit detailed forms including personal information, medical records, and police clearance at least two days prior to travel.
