The authorities have provided strict instruction to immediately push back the Myanmar nationals

Update : 25 Jul 2023, 04:46 PM

As many as 718 Myanmar nationals, including 301 children, crossed the Indian border and entered the Manipur state without proper travel documents.

The incident occurred within a span of just two days between July 22 to 23, raising concerns over border security.

Following the report, the Manipur government has taken action to immediately push back the Myanmar nationals.

Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi said: "The state government has sought a detailed report from Assam Rifles Authority to clarify on the facts and compelling circumstances, as to why and how these 718 Myanmar nationals were allowed to enter into India in Chandel District without proper travel documents."

“The authorities have provided strict advice to immediately push back these 718 illegal Myanmar nationals,” he said.

He also added: “The state government had previously directed the border guarding force to take strict action to prevent the entry of Myanmar nationals into Manipur without valid visa or travel documents. This directive aligns with the instructions of the Indian Home Affairs Ministry.”

The Assam Rifles notified the deputy commissioner of Chandel district that on Sunday, 718 fresh refugees crossed the Indo-Myanmar border and entered Manipur through Chandel district. The influx was a consequence of the ongoing clashes at Khampat in Myanmar.

Chandel District police deputy commissioner and superintendent have been advised to oversee the implementation of the above measures and maintain biometrics and photographs of all such persons.

Meanwhile, the Manipur police registered an FIR for a fake news item falsely portraying a video of a woman's killing by armd men in Myanmar as an incident in the state.

The police tweeted that efforts are underway to arrest those spreading the fake news and inciting rioting through the circulated clip.

Police registered an FIR for spreading fake news. The viral video showing a woman being assaulted and killed by a mob in Myanmar was falsely depicted as a case in Manipur. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

At least 125 people have been killed and more than 40,000 have fled their homes in Manipur since the violence erupted on May 3.

The clashes in the state bordering Myanmar began when the Kuki tribal group clashed with a non-tribal group, the ethnic majority Meitei, over sharing economic benefits and quotas given to the tribes.

The trouble was quelled after New Delhi rushed thousands of paramilitary and army troops to the state of 3.2 million people.

But sporadic violence and killings resumed soon afterwards and the state has remained tense since. Videos showing women being molested in May surfaced this week and sparked national outrage.
