Man donates 17,700 bottles of sanitizer after public outcry

The Amazon seller faces an investigation for price gouging

Update : 17 Mar 2020, 09:34 PM

A man from Tennessee, USA donated 17,700 bottles of hand sanitizer after news reports revealed his plan to sell them online at marked-up prices.

Matt Colvin, an Amazon seller, helped local volunteers load two thirds of his stockpile of hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes on trucks for distribution in Tennessee on Sunday. The Tennessee attorney general’s office took the other third to give to their counterparts in Kentuky for distribution there, reports the New York Times.

On Saturday, the New York Times had published a report on how Colvin and his brother stockpiled wipes and hand sanitizer to profit off of the panic over coronavirus. He had sold 300 bottles at marked-up prices on Amazon before his listing was removed.

Amazon also warned sellers that they would be suspended for price gouging.

The report by the New York Times on Saturday led to wide spread public outcry, with Colvin even receiving hate mail and death threats.

In an interview on Sunday, Colvin apologized for his actions and claimed he did not realize the magnitude of the coronavirus pandemic when he decided to hoard the hand sanitizer.
