Watch: Shakib urges help for Rohingya refugees

Update : 24 Sep 2017, 03:03 PM
Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan has urged people to come to the aid of the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. As the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Bangladesh, the ace all-rounder visited the Rohingya camps where he saw the miserable living conditions of the refugees first hand. A video has been released in the official Facebook page of UNICEF Bangladesh where the star cricketer is seen, visiting one of the many refugee camps.“I am here at a Rohingya camp, I came here with UNICEF. I have witnessed the tragic conditions of the refugees here and I want the people of Bangladesh to come forward and aid them.” said Shakib. “I know that many other countries are offering relief and Bangladesh is trying her outmost but much more is needed.” “There are a lot of women and children in these camps who are at risk. So I am sure you (the people) will come to their assistance. To help them, please visit the UNICEF website, click on the donate button and offer aid.” About a million Rohingya Muslims live in apartheid-like conditions in squalid camps in northwestern Rakhine state, where they are denied citizenship and basic rights and are persecuted. As many as 75,000 Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh to escape persecution in Myanmar after its military launched a crackdown in October last year.
